Understanding Alternator Motor Starting Capability

Course Description: An alternator’s motor starting KVA (sKVA) capability is critical for motor starting applications - one of the toughest load types. There are two mutually exclusive test methods used to determine an alternator’s motor starting curves. This course clarifies the operating principles behind these curves and explains NEMA MG1 guidelines on generator sizing for motor starting applications. The course is free of charge.

Objectives: After this course, you will be able to:
1. Describe how an instantaneous voltage dip curve is derived
2. Describe how the 90% sustained voltage curve is derived
3. Explain why NEMA MG1 guidelines incorporate both testing methods in the instantaneous voltage dip curve
4. State why roll-off voltage dip must be considered because a generator set is a limited power source
