Alternator Design, Excitation, and Selection

Course Description: Alternators are an integral part of the backup generator set. This course will explain the components that go into the design and construction of an alternator, and we will dive into the different types of excitation system designs. We will also identify key performance characteristics to consider and where to find them on an alternator data sheet to select the best alternator. The course is free of charge.

Objectives: After this course, you will be able to:
1. Identify the basic components of an alternator and how they function.
2. Verbally identify some pros and cons of various excitation systems.
3. Explain the important characteristics defined in an alternator data sheet.
